Review

Well, to start with, I am making a very bold statement which in my view holds true in every sense of film-making - "There are films and There is GRAVITY". Yes, its that awesome, superb and breathtaking.

Before I watched this movie, I heard amazing reviews of this film everywhere, so naturally my expectations from this film were really very high. In fact, I coaxed and persuaded my wife to hilt by saying all good and nice things about this movie and finally convinced her to watch it on Sunday morning (she usually doesn't want to step out of the house on Sunday morning especially for a movie). Believe me you, I was very worried till the movie started thinking what will happen to my rest of Sunday/Week if this movie does not fall in line with my expectations. Normally, It happens very seldom that if you have very high expectations from something or someone, its turns out to be better than that. GRAVITY is such a beautiful movie which exceeded well beyond all my expectations.

GRAVITY is as jaw-droppingly spectacular as many of us have heard — magnificent from a technical perspective but also a marvel of controlled acting and precise tone. This is the best film I have seen so far this year and probably one of the top 10 films I have seen so far in my lifetime.

Cuarón shows a commendable talent by staging the most immersive 3D experience we have seen so far. I am pretty sure that this time he will not miss Oscar for Best Director like he missed for Children of Men in year 2006. Father and Son Cuaróns crafted a delicately understated theme and wrote this beautiful story that beautifully plays off the title while examining how life can weigh us all down and the freedom that comes from finally letting go. It’s a compelling narrative and one the Cuaróns smartly allow to progress naturally instead of hammering the point repeatedly to ensure the audience gets it. Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography is truly breathtaking. Shots like a slowly arriving sunrise and the vast darkness of space feel like we’re seeing it for the first time despite them being staples of countless science-fiction films.

It's very surprising (but in pleasant way) that there are only two characters in this film - Dr. Ryan Stone (played by Bullock) and Matt Kwalosky (played by Clooney). The film looks complete and balanced even with only 2 characters.

Clooney is as refreshing and smooth as ever with his chuckles, charm and charismatic screen presence and played a very pivotal role. He is the one who sometimes gives a bit of easy and relaxing moments in this very engaging thriller.

However, this film pivots around Bullock. She has essentially been asked to provide a solo performance here and she takes the audience through a tremendously developed and complete character arc. She hits the gamut of emotions from terror, perseverance, despair, grief and acceptance with so ease and conviction. In the film’s climax moment, Bullock gives a powerful monologue that should be the clip used for her Oscar Best Actress nomination highlight.

Although each nan-second of this film is my favourite moment in this film, however, few stood out ahead
  • Interaction between Clooney and Bullock where Clooney inspired Bullock in her dreams when she gave up and ready to die. This scene is something, has some kind of magic which even inspires the viewers watching it that now nothing will go bad and worst is already over
  • Last frame of film, when Bullock fails to stand up at beach after returning to earth, then smiles at herself and said "no". In my view, this is really the perfect closure of her epic saga and adventure.
  • Bullock's monologue with herself during the entire film but especially when she decides to fight against the odds. That was real kick ass moment for me in this movie.
In the end, I would like to say that this film and cast/crew deserve the standing ovation from all and should be preserved like a gem forever with tightest of security.

If you haven't watch this yet, then I will just say to you which is also the tagline of this film - "DON'T LET GO".

It's once a lifetime experience which you indeed never should let go, really.

Happy MovieWatching !!
