Review
I know and I completely understand your astonishment after reading the subject of this review. I mean who writes the review of a film in year 2014 which was made in year 1986 and that too of a movie which was not even a hit when it was released.
But for me and for movie lovers like me especially those crazy people who absolutely cherish the quality movies, it is no ordinary movie. Its a small but a definite step towards quality movie making, quality display of acting skills, quality script, quality comic punches and timings, quality direction and quality casting in times when "quality" used to be the most understated feature of movie making. Although the fate of this movie on box office when it got released was not that pleasant for producers but one thing is for sure that for viewers at all times including today, this film never fails to disappoint in providing a whole heartedly good laugh.
The story of this film revolves around two main protagonists - Charandas (played by Anil Kapoor) and Chameli (played by Amrita Singh) and their lover story and finally marriage. Charandas is an educated but unemployed youth who lives with his elder brother Bhajandas (played by Satyen Kappu) and sister-in-law (played by Tabbassum) in a small colony in a small town of India. He is shown as the leader of gang of other same aged unemployed youths in his colony and as his favourite past-time learns wrestling under the guidance of his teacher Mastram (played by Om Prakash). In the same colony, a small time coal dealer Kallumal (played "brilliantly" by Pankaj Kapoor) also lives with his wife Champa (played by Bharati Achrekar) and their daughter Chameli (played by Amrita Singh).
Both Charandas and Chameli met each other, fell in love and started dating each other. Since both of them fell in the love for first time and it was a new feeling for both of them, they both sought help and support from more experienced accomplices - Charandas got this support from a local advocate who also lives in the same colony named Harish (played by Amjad Khan) and Chameli got this support from her friend Anita (played by Komal Mahuverkar). When Kallumal and his wife Champa get to know that their daughter Chameli is dating Charandas who belongs to a different community and also unemployed, they lock up her in her room and Champa calls her brother Chaganlal (played by Annu Kapoor) who is shown as drunkard and small time crook to teach a lesson to Charandas. The rest of the story deals with how Charandas handles Chaganlal, what happened to their love affair and in the end, how they managed to marry each other with help of advocate Harish and other friends.
The screenplay, dialogue writing and direction of this rib-tickling comedy is superb and all credit goes to Mr. Basu Chatterjee. There is never a dull moment in the entire movie expect during songs which are kind of forced and unrelated to the overall plot. All actors have truly justified the roles given to them but special credit goes to Pankaj Kapoor and Amrita Singh who perhaps has played her lifetime best role as lead actress.
Overall this movie can be easily put under one of the best comedy films bollywood has ever produced and definitely can be considered equal amongst cinematic greats under comedy genre such as Jaane bhi do yaaro, Andaaz apna apna, Golmaal etc.
In last, one of my motives for writing this movie review today is to persuade those readers who have not watched this movie yet, it is not to be missed. I highly recommend this movie if you are feeling low or lonely or just want to laugh for 2 complete hours.
