What's it all about

"NO means NO" - Never seen such a short crisp tag line of a movie which captures the entire essence of movie so beautifully. For those who still could not get it - this film is about respecting and honoring a girls' choice  irrespective of her attire, her sexuality, her openness and her casual & carefree attitude. Her consent matters and if she says NO, it means NO.

Review

Well, I know I am writing after a very long time. Its definitely not that I have not seen films all this while but surely could not find much time to pen down any review. Another way to put the same thing is all this while no movie really excited me that much (except few such as Talwar or Tanu weds Manu returns) or irritated me that much (yes, not even Sultan or Happy bhaag jaayegi - they were pathetic but still pardonable) that I am forced to spend some time to write.

But this is different. Not just because of the direction which is of superior quality, or performances of each actor which can be used to show (to upcoming actors or existing stars) how acting should be done (especially to current generation model turned actresses) or the background score which perfectly balances with the scenes on screen but this is also different and very special because of the subject which this film wishes to convey. The central plot of the movie is extraordinarily brave but at the same time its an honest indictment of all what is horribly wrong with us as society.

The film opens with a scene where our three female protagonists (Tapsee, Kirti & Andrea) are looking tensed travelling in a taxi - seemed running away from a crime scene. Few minutes later we found out that Minal (played brilliantly by Tapsee) in her self defense hit Rajbeer on his head (played by Angad) with a bottle. It was a no brainer since beginning that who is good and who is evil. All three girls are independent working women living in a rented flat in a society in a posh location of South Delhi. After this incident in a resort in Surajkund, girls are disturbed but trying to forget and leading the normal life. But boys are rattled not because of the injury but because of injury that are caused by the girls. By the first half of the film, due to some twists and twirls in the story, matter reaches the court.

Till the first half, the thespian, Amitabh is shown to be on sidelines as a neighbour of these three girls. He used to be a renowned lawyer who has now called it quits and struggling with his mental condition and his wife's terminal illness. He witnessed the helplessness of these girls and agreed to fight for them in court. In court he is arguing the case with talented Piyush Mishra who is representing the boys. Second half of the film displays one of the best court room dramas hindi film industry witnessed ever. Its gripping, well presented, without breaks and with awesome performances specially by Tapsee, Kirti, Amitabh and Piyush Mishra.

Each actor has justified his / her role to the fullest. In real life its impossible to imagine to be typical Bollywood over the top character like Rani Mukherjee in "Raja ki aayegi Baaraat" answering tough questions, arguing with lawyers in court especially if charges against the girl are about prostitution. Tapsee perfected the role with ease and very convincingly. But surprise to me was the performance by Kirti. She was on the top of everyone. The scene in which she accepted that she took money in court was one of the best scenes of the film. Amitabh as usual was in his sublime touch and the court room arguments made by him were simply breathtaking. His closing arguments were so well written that it deserve special mention.

In the end of the film, there are two scenes which moved me emotionally. One in which after winning the case, Tapsee and Kirti are thanking Amitabh with tears in eyes and smiles on faces summarizes the happy ending of overall ordeal the girls, their families and we went through in two hours.

Another scene in which lady police constable is thanking Amitabh is also very emotional. For me personally, it was like I am thanking him to pay my gratitude to entire crew of Pink to make this master-piece, to Amitabh personally who still mesmerizes us with his performances, to changing tastes of Indian audiences who very gradually started preferring sensical films rather than tortures in the name of nonsensical entertainment.

Overall, I would urge everyone out there to go watch this hooked up in your seats, relish it thoroughly and if possible try to imbibe the message given by this film in their personal lives.
Till the next such master-piece, happy movie watching!!
